The Pittsburgh Penguins partnered with UPMC to develop a “first-of-its-kind” sports performance center and NHL practice rink. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex is the main training center for the Pittsburgh Penguins and has 50,000 sf of clinical space for world-class orthopedic and therapy programs for injury treatment and prevention. Using the latest technology, the venue advises on all areas of athletic performance and includes a concussion clinic, imaging, physical therapy, and sports performance training.
Developing Athletes
The 180,000 sf facility was designed to allow for the integration of the training facility with UPMC’s performance and medical uses. When the new rink is not being used by the Penguins, it is open to the public for skating and other events. A common area is available to the public and includes a 1,500 sf hockey skills training area, open skating availability, eight community locker rooms, two private event spaces, an on-site cafe', retail shops, and more.
