We set out to create the ultimate entertainment destination and certainly a place never before experienced in the UK or elsewhere in Europe. ICON was able to bring the lessons learned from AEG’s US projects and meld those into the unique culture and branding environment we needed here in London. Their project management was brilliant.
Description: 20,000-seat sports/entertainment arena Owner: AEG Architect: Populous CM/GC: Sir Robert McAlpine Budget: £150,000,000 Status: Completed - June 24, 2007
ICON served as Owner’s Representative for AEG in its pursuit to build a 20,000-seat arena as the anchor of a large entertainment district underneath the roof of the former Millennium Dome. This massive scale “ship in a bottle” had never before been attempted. With no clearance inside the dome to use tower cranes to erect its superstructure, the team built the arena from the top down. The O2 immediately became the most spectacular arena in the world and the first ever venue to be named by Pollstar as “Best New Concert Venue” and “Best International Arena of the Year” in the same year.
